Founded August 15, 1964
In 1964, Venerable Aloysius Schwartz founded the Sisters of Mary in Busan, Korea to serve orphans, abandoned street children, mendicants and homeless men and women, mentally and physically challenged, and elderly, the sick and the unwed mothers.
The Sisters fulfill in their little way their Patroness’ message of relieving the suffering of the poor by establishing child welfare programs called Boystown and Girlstown Schools for the orphans and abandoned and poor children, setting up hospitals to give free medical and surgical services to indigent sick and hospices for the homeless, physically challenged men and women and unwed mothers. More than 20,000 orphans and abandoned children have graduated; millions of sick people have been treated and more than 5,000 babies saved from abortion in our pro-life activities.
All charity programs in Korea were established before the demise of Venerable Al. At present, the country is well-developed and provides for the people’s education, medical care, and other needs. Thus, the Sisters decided to close their charity programs and concentrate in the most needy places in other parts of the world.
